Bangarh is now a hamlet situated near Gangarampur town in South Dinajpur district. Earlier it was known as Devkot, Ktivarsha & several other names. It came into existence in the times of the Mauryas. Till the end of medieval period the place continued to be the centre of art, education, business & power. It experienced the rule of who's who of Indian history --- Mauryas, Kusanas,Guptas, Palas, Senas & afghans.
In the 30s' of 20th century excavation at Bangarh revealed the remains of a citadel. Use of bricks in its construction was a characteristic of the period of Kusanas. Remains of the boundary are still there. The wall is multi-layered. There is a chamber which was supposedly a granary.
There is a beautiful tribal village nearby with neatly coloured huts. The village has a strange construction dating back to the Palas. There are four stone-made pillars on the four corners of a square plot. There is neither roof nor wall. Purpose of this construction is still unknown.
Bangarh is now almost a forgotten place. For local people it's any other picnic spot. Winter is the best time to visit. The sprawling mustard field makes Bangarh really beautiful. Local
laal doi (red coloured curd) is a must-have.
Bangarh can be reached by car from Balurghat which is 45 km away.

Can you tell me the name of a king who ruled Bangarh.😊
ReplyDeleteThe Palas ruled the region that included Bangarh. There is a pond which is named after Mahipala, one of the famous Palas.
